  Newsletter brings the latest information to Federation members for free. The Publication comes out every March, June and October.

• Forum on successful application of SME loan
  Loan application procedures for small and medium enterprises was the focus of the forum held by the Federation last September 19, 1998.

• Honorary ISO 9000 consultants
  Three consultants were appointed by the Federation to help raise the awareness on ISO and provide members with advice that is free of charge on ISO certification.

• ISO certification, company debts management forum
  A forum on ISO certification and company debts management held last April 1999 at the Kowloon Shangri-la Hotel had ISO consultants and government representatives as speakers.

• Scholarship/grants for members' children
  Scholarships/grants to qualified children of members to encourage academic excellence will be open for application in September.

• Participation fee cuts for members at the HK Watch & Clock Fair 1999, 2000
  Federation members who will join the HK Watch & Clock Fair 2000 will enjoy a 13 percent discount in the participation fee.

• Staggered payment scheme for HKTDC fair fees
  The Federation is urging the HKTDC to adopt an installment payment scheme for Hong Kong manufacturers' participation fee.

• Proposed Government export promo subsidy fund
  The call for other export trade associations and parties to urge the HKSAR government to set up an Export Promotion Subsidize Fund continues.

Promotion Activities within the Industry

• Study Mission to Myanmar
  The Federation held a five-day tour to Myanmar from June 25 to 29, 1999 to explore the unfamiliar Myanmar market.

• Watch and Clock Column at the Hong Kong Economic Times
  Read about the industry's latest happenings at the Watch and Clock Column every first Friday of each month at the Hong Kong Economic Times.

• Industry innovation, technology explored
  The Federation plans to actively make enquiry with several large watch and clock groups and members to promote innovation and technology related to the watch and clock industry.

• Board of Directors visits the Central Government
  The Board of Directors' Beijing tour in October 1999 touched on the role Hong Kong industries and businesses once mainland China enters the World Trade Organization.

Co-operation with the HKTDC and the HKPC

• Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair 1999
  The Fair has become the world's second largest watch and clock fair, with buyers from all over the world attending.

• Hong Kong Watch & Clock Solo Fair for the South American market
  Held in Miami from March 8 to 10, 1999, the fair was intended to tap the huge watch and clock market in South America.

• Hong Kong Watch and Clock Solo Fair for Middle East Markets
  Encouraged by the results of the Miami Exhibition, the Federation held another fair tour this time in the Middle East.

• Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC)
  Hong Kong Industrial Promotion Planning Committee (HKIPPC)
  The HKIPPC, a committee created by the HKPC, has been tasked to increase public concern and awareness on Hong Kong industries since 1998. The Federation has been part of the committee since its inception.

Liaison with the Hong Kong Branch of XIN HUA News Agency

• Meeting with XIN HUA News Agency, timepieces associations
  The Federation hosted the April 19 meeting at the Kowloon Club to express views on China's entering WTO and its effect on trade.

Watch and clock industry training and educational promotion

• 2-year diploma course on basics of the timepieces industry
  A two-year watch and clock trade and industry diploma course has been developed by the Department of Manufacturing Engineering of the Hong Kong Vocational Institute of Education (Lee Wai Lee), with the help of the Federation and the Hong Kong Watch Manufacturers Association.

• Weekend technology development course
  A vocational training course on technology development is offered during weekends by the Hong Kong Vocational Institute of Education (Tsing Yi)'s Manufacturing Engineering Department.

Joint activities with other local or overseas watch and clock industry-asssociated federations

• Hong Kong Watch Manufacturers Association (HKWMA)
  Regular meetings held to uplift industry promotion
  Regular meetings between the Federation and the HKWMA aim to uplift industry promotion, work on mutual goals and strive for the members' mutual benefits.

• Shenzhen Watchmakers Association
  Meeting with Nanshan district government heads, foreign watch enterprises
  Hong Kong firms met with Nanshan district government heads, foreign watch enterprises on the impact of the mainland's foreign capital enterprise investment policies, customs system on members moving production up north.

Seminar on computerized watch, clock management technology
The seminar enabled people in the industry to broaden their perspective and appreciate more the importance of three-dimensional design softwares to the industry.

• China Horologe Federation
  Focus on mutual development, cooperation
  The two-year old Horologe Federation aims to enhance communication, cooperation and to promote mutual development.

Branded Watch and Clock Guide Publication
A publication intended to promote the sales of the world's branded watches and clocks, new products, styles and sales channels of China-, Hong Kong- and Taiwan-made branded watches and clocks.

• Korea Watch and Clock Industry Cooperative
  Visit to KOWIC
  The Federation held a Korea 4-Day Tour last October 16 to 19, 1998 and visited the Korea Watch and Clock Industry Cooperative and the Military Prohibited Area.

• Singapore Clock & Watch Trade Association
  KL Selangor Watch Trade Association
  Meeting with watch & clock trade associations in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Selangor
  Meeting with watch and clock trade associations in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Selangor promote mutual business cooperation as well as strengthen ties with other Southeast Asian counterparts

Liaisons with Government departments:

• Visit to the Trade Department, HKSAR Government
  Major issues discussed in the January 13, 1999 visit were the Harmonization of the Rules of Origin's latest development.

• Visit to the Industry Department, HKSAR Government
  The visit in January 18, 1999 gave way to the discussion of the industry's present situation as well as the concern on the high fees being charged by the HKTDC and HKPC.

• Visit to the Trade & Industry Bureau, HKSAR Government
  The Government's role in helping the watch and clock industry in exploring overseas markets was brought up in the meeting with Secretary for the Trade & Industry Chau Tak Hay last February 10, 1999.

Communication ties with other major business associations:

• Meeting with FHKI chairman
  Technology development, high exhibition fees top the discussion at the meeting with Federation of HK Industries Chairman Henry Tang last January 7, 1999.

• Visit to the Kowloon Chamber of Commerce
  The Federation met about 100 directors in its meeting with the Kowloon Chamber of Commerce last January 12, 1999.

• Visit to the HK General Chamber of Commerce
  Container terminal charges, the performance of the HKTDC and the HKPC, and the fund allocation scheme of the Government to aid the industry were among the issues discussed at the meeting last January 15, 1999.

• Visit to the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce
  Chinese General Chamber of Commerce Chairman Dr. Robin Chan and Assistant Treasurer Tang Kwan met with representatives of the Federation last January 15, 1999. Both gave a backgrounder on their groups.
